Abstract

The current status of the problem of viral hepatitis E is presented in this article. Hepatitis E viral infection has traditionally been considered an acute, self-limited disease similar to hepatitis A. The hepatitis E virus (HEV) has been recognized for decades as a major cause of outbreaks associated with faecal contamination of drinking water in developing countries. This pathogen is now also recognized as a major etiologic agent of acute hepatitis in industrialized countries that is transmitted zoonotically. The imported case of HEV on the territory of the Republic of Belarus in combination with acute HIV infection is described.
