THE INFLUENCE OF ESSENTIAL PHOSPHOLIPIDS ON THE COURSE OF NON-ALCOHOLIC AND ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASES
Abstract
Background. Though essential phospholipids (EPL) from soybean are often used in membrane-associated disorders and diseases, their effects on common liver diseases, especially on fatty liver diseases of different origin, are still widely unknown being the matter of ongoing active research.The objective of the study is to review, discuss and summarize the available data on EPL in non-alcoholic and alcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD and ALD).
Materials and methods. Database search was carried out using Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, journals published in particular countries and citations from relevant hepatogastroenterological articles between 1988 and 2018. Those documents were analyzed only that indicated that minimum amount of phosphatidylcholine (PC) extraction from soy was 72% with a significant content of 1,2-dilinoeoyl phosphatidylcholine (DLPC) as a key component of EPL.
Results. EPL have proved to be therapeutically effective and nontoxic, ensuring clinically relevant efficacy-safety ratio. EPL affect membrane-dependent cellular functions, including enzymes and receptors, and produce anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-fibrogenic, anti-apoptotic, membrane-protective, cell signalling and lipid-regulating effects. Due to their positive effect on membrane composition and function EPL facilitate the improvement of patients’ condition or the normalization of subjective symptoms, pathological clinical and biochemical results, liver imaging and histology findings. The received data justify the use of EPL alongside with other medications in liver diseases treatment.
Conclusion. Pharmacological and clinical findings confirm the effectiveness of EPL in fatty liver disease treatment.
